GREAT BLACK SPEECHES 2 LP SET
Caedmon Records # TC 2070
Shocking artwork on the front cover of three slaves getting ready to get even with their master, illustrated by Don Miller. The back cover goes into great detail about the speech material contained on the records, and also includes text from “The Present And Future Of The Colored Race In America” by Frederick Douglass from 1863. Inside the gatefold is a listing of other releases on the Caedmon label.
The speeches on the records are:
1- “O Ye Sons Of Africa”, by Frances Maria Stewart from 1833
2- “Rather Die Freemen Than Live As Slaves”, by Henry Highland Garnet from 1843
3- “An Appeal To British People”, by Frederick Douglass from 1846
4- “Atlanta Exposition Address”, by Booker T. Washington from 1893.
The speech material is read on these records by Claudia McNeil and Norman Matlock.
The front cover has very little wear, and the detail is vivid. The back cover has a bit of minor wear on the background. The seams and spine have a small amount of very light wear and no splitting. There are small corner dings on the cover. The records look like they have had little play, and only on side A are a handful of small light scratches, none of which can be felt on the grooves. However under a lamp one of the records shows cosmetic marking on the surface; it looks like it is in the vinyl, and I do not know if it was manufactured like this or if it somehow occurred later. It is smooth and superficial and cannot be felt on the grooves. The second record has just a bit of these markings, if you look closely.
